It ended up being the coolant sensor. At the time I didn't have the time to change it myself so I had it done with some regular maintenance. In the middle of the series of pictures on<a href="http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/engine/154_0608_1987_jeep_wrangler_xj/viewall.html" rel="nofollow"> this page</a> is a picture of where the sensor is on the engine. It looks like the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BZC3NQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=mostfofr-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000BZC3NQ" rel="nofollow">replacement sensor</a> is about $30.
