Energy Conservation

I’m always trying to find more information and sites on conserving energy in general, but especially when it comes to making my older home more energy efficient.

Simply Insulate – Has information about insulation basics, federal tax incentives for adding insulation to your home and recommended R-values for your area.

Green Building Information

I’ve had the opportunity to see part of the construction of a LEED certified green building, and it really got me interested in the different green construction and technologies out there.

Eco Stucco – lime based stucco that doesn’t crack easily
Demilec – spray foam manufacturer
Integrated Concrete Forms – There was no one company, but many. “A larger demonstration of the integrated concrete form or ICF. Contractors build up the forms on the job site and then pour in the concrete.”
Paperstone – They take pulp from a neighbouring paper factory, mix it with resins, and cook it till it turns into a stonelike tile.
Kerei Board – made from sorghum stocks, an edible grass pretty much grown everywhere. After the food part of the plant is harvested, the stalks are collected, pressed and heat-pressed.
KSD window – The window consists of three panes of glass. The key feature, though, is the green pane of glass on the outside. It reflects heat. When the green side it turned outside, toward the sun, it reflects heat from the sun back to the outside, keeping the house cool. In winter, you can pivot the window to bring the green side in. In that case, it keeps the heat from escaping.
Aqus – uses water from the sink to flush the toilet.
Eco Smart ethanol fireplace – A fireplace that runs on ethanol. Pour in a gallon and it runs for 68 hours. You don’t need venting.
