I want to better winterize the home. I’m going to work from the cheapest solutions to the more expensive ones. My goal is to get all of this done within a month for the first two sections. The more costly options will have to be done over a longer period so we’re paying cash for the improvement.First I’ll start by sealing up any gaps and areas that heat can escape. This includes:
- Sealing outlets and holes on the exterior walls
- We don’t use the fireplaces so I will put in rigid foam dampers in the fireplace flues
Next is to make sure my HVAC system is maintained.
- I already have a service contract with a local company to do a system check every Spring and Fall. So, it is just a matter of calling to make an appointment.
- Cleaning / changing air filters.
I want to do at least one of the following improvements. They are a little more costly, but I’m trying to cut long term costs.
- Paint walls that face the exterior and ceilings that touch the attic with a ceramic paint additive. I came across a number of sites that sold a paint additive that is designed to act as a radiant barrier.
- Increase the amount of insulation on the attic floor. The attic is unfinished and it is clear I don’t have an r-value of 49. I am thinking of using mineral wool or fiberglass. I’m up in the air about using batting or loose.
