Warning: There is a chance that popcorn ceilings can contain asbestos. If there is any doubt you should use a asbestos services professional to test for it.
This is the second of three posts on removing the popcorn ceiling in our library, formally known as the formal dinning room.
Supplies:
- Homax ceiling texture scraper
- 50′ Hose
- 6″ steel scraper
- Step ladder
Before starting, I did a visual inspection of the area to make sure it there was sufficient overlap in the seams.

Prepped Room with Plastic on Walls
Water is used to loosen the old texture for scraping. In the past I tried using the equivalent of a bug sprayer to apply the water, but that was too much work. This time I brought the hose in.

Hose Going Into The Room

Garden Hose In The Room
It took a little confidence in my prep job to spray the ceiling with the hose. I used the shower setting on the nozzle. I wanted the top coating to get wet without soaking the drywall underneath.

Wet Popcorn Ceiling
After I cleared the hose from the room, I used the ceiling texture scraper on a broom handle to scrape the popcorn. One thing is I didn’t bother using the bag attachment that is supposed to catch the falling texture. The first time I used this it quickly got heavy. It took 1/2 an hour to scrape the ceiling. Because of how wet the drywall underneath was, I had to be careful around the joints otherwise the taping would come off.

Scraping Texture Off Ceiling

Close-Up Of Scraping Ceiling Texture
The scraper on the wood handle would only get close to the edge where the walls meet the ceiling. A hand scraper was used to do the finish work on the ceilings.

Detail Scraping Around Ceiling Edges
After all the scraping was done there was a huge mess. The wet popcorn texture was caking to my shoes every-time I walked on it. The plastic leading up to the room provided a great place to take my shoes on and off before going into the rest of the house.

Scraped Popcorn Ceiling On The Floor

Are you sure there was no asbestos on the popcorn ceiling ?
Otherwise it’s really dangerous!
That is something that you have to keep in mind. If there is any doubt you should use a asbestos services professional to test for it. Thanks for your concern.
Thank you very much for this technique tip. I was trying to do it all by hand on a ladder. This was absolutely irritating as I had to keep getting up and down off the ladder to move it to the next spot. In the pictures I see water on the plastic, how did you wet the ceiling first? I only used a spray bottle.
I have already ripped up the carpet from this area (only concrete now), I was too tired getting up and down off the ladder, how do you suggest I proceed with my project?
