The book was published in 2002, but the information on where efforts count the most for insulating and weatherizing a home are is very relevant considering today’s energy conservation trends. The visual layout and organization of the book makes it pleasant to read, and in conjunction with the excellent pictures the topics are easily understood.
What I really like is all the even numbered pages have a Pro Tip and a Trade Secret. The Pro Tips are quick one or two sentences of information like “A well-insulated water tank (water heater) won’t benefit from extra insulation, but a cheaply made tank can save you up to 10% on your water heating bill.” The Trade Secrets are a paragraph about the current content subject. An example would is what can go wrong when considering to buy new windows in relation to the edge seals.
Bruce Harley does an excellent job of explaining some complex topics such as heat transfer and thermal boundaries in layman’s terms. At the very least check this book out from the library. I’m finding it to be a valuable reference.
